High School Literature: The Glass Castle and Poetry
Grades 9-12
$225 per semester (one voucher)

Studying, analyzing, and discussing literature is an invaluable high school experience. Engaging literature has the ability to draw students in, develop critical thinking, expand vocabulary, and improve both writing and communication skills. This semester we will read and analyze one high school level novel and a variety of compelling poems. Students will be introduced to famous poets across the ages including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Robert Frost, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, and more. Each week the students will read and annotate, focusing on various aspects of the reading including mood, theme, characters, conflict, literary devices, and personal and real world connections. Homework will prepare them for discussion, increase their critical thinking skills, and satisfy state a-g curriculum requirements. All books and poems will be provided and are included in the class tuition. Fall semester we will be reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and a variety of classic and new poems.

This class is aligned with state a-g curriculum standards and when taken alongside the high school writing class will satisfy most of the semester’s High School English Language Arts curriculum requirements.

High School Writing

​This class must be taken with the High School Literature class and will focus on writing projects, essays, and responses centered around the novels and poems studied. All work and projects are designed to meet a-g curriculum requirements. This semester, student writing assignments will focus on literary response, poetry, creative, and argument writing.
This class must be taken in combination with the High School Literature class.

Civics: Current Events & Global Issues
Grades 9-12

Analyzing current events helps students better understand the world around them. Through socratic class discussion, students will learn to critically think about the facts and history behind the headlines while gaining understanding of the importance of people, events, and issues in the news. Today’s students need an understanding of the world’s economy, politics, social structures, and environment in order to become active, informed citizens. At the same time, consuming news with a critical eye is vital to enhancing democracy. Special attention will be paid to credibility of sources, bias, and discerning fact from fiction.

History: United States

Students study the ideas, issues, and events from the framing of the Constitution (beginning with colonization) up to reconstruction following the Civil War. After reviewing the development of America's democratic institutions, particularly the shaping of the Constitution, students trace the development of American politics, society, culture, and economy and relate them to the emergence of major regional differences. They learn about the challenges facing the new nation, with an emphasis on the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War. They make connections between the rise of industrialization and contemporary social and economic conditions. (Year long class, students welcome to join in the Spring)

World Geography (Fall Semester)

This course offers students a comprehensive exploration of the world's diverse regions, focusing on the relationship between physical geography and human cultures. Students will examine how geographic features—such as climate, landforms, and natural resources—affect human activities, settlement patterns, and cultural development. They will also explore how human actions impact the environment, leading to changes in landscapes and ecosystems.
Through the lens of the Five Themes of Geography, students will:

Location: Investigate the position of places on Earth and their significance.

Place: Explore the physical and human characteristics that make each region unique.

Human-Environment Interaction: Analyze how humans adapt to and modify their environment, and how this relationship shapes society.

Movement: Study the movement of people, goods, and ideas across the globe, and how this influences global interconnectedness.

Regions: Examine the different regions of the world, defined by common physical and human characteristics, to understand global diversity.
By the end of the course, students will have a deeper understanding of how geography shapes human history and prepares them to contribute to a rapidly changing world. This course aligns with the California History-Social Science Content Standards, emphasizing geographic literacy and global awareness.

Modern Day Artists
Grades 7-12

Whether you consider yourself an artist or not, you're sure to have fun trying out the abstract and experimental art styles of modern day art from Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, to iconic artists that are alive today. Students will learn about the stories of art periods and movements of the modern day as well as the artists who were involved in those. Here is a sneak peak of some of those interesting stories we will learn about and art we will create: Discover why a stool with a bicycle tire attached to the seat is in the Museum of Modern art. Make your own "Fake Art" piece using paint in a mini pendulum you make to imitate the style of Callen Schaub, the artist whose paintings on Fender guitars sell for thousands of dollars. Learn about the science and engineering discovered behind Jackson Pollock's drip paintings and have fun making your own drip painting too.

Study Hall and Tutoring

​The Advanced Learning and Planning period will be a dedicated time for students to work independently on their school assignments under adult supervision and help when needed. Each day, students will start by completing a weekly planner, where they will estimate the time needed for their tasks. After this planning session, they will have 30 to 40 minutes to work on their assignments. For those who wish to use this time to prepare for standardized tests, I will provide grade-level-specific sample CAASPP questions in Math, English, and Science, along with answer keys for their parents.

Film Making

Discover the art of filmmaking as you learn to create stories, shoot exciting visuals, and edit your own short films. This hands-on class lets you explore how film shapes the world around you while equipping you with the skills needed to bring your ideas to life. In addition to learning about the many aspects of film production behind and in-front of the camera you will also learn how to shoot and edit on an Apple phone or iPad. Please bring one with you to class if available to practice on.

Food Around the World: A Global Adventure!

Get ready for an exciting culinary journey this semester! Each week, we’ll travel to a new country, exploring its vibrant culture, iconic landmarks, and of course, sampling some of their dishes. We’ll be hopping from the charming streets of France to the bustling markets of South Korea, the hearty kitchens of Poland, and many more incredible destinations!
As we embark on this global adventure, we’ll also discover the top attractions in each country. From the Eiffel Tower in France to the ancient palaces of Korea, you'll learn about the incredible places that make each destination unique. Not only will we taste the flavors of the world, but we’ll also explore the history and geography behind these unforgettable landmarks. Get ready to learn, taste, and have fun as we go on this whirlwind world tour of food and fascinating places!

Leadership & Service: FLA Student Government

​Through a series of guided interaction and group exercises, students will explore the principles of leadership and learn to develop individual and group leadership skills to impact their lives and their communities. Content areas include decision-making, goal setting, effective communication, servant leadership, organization and time management skills, and concrete strategies to implement change. Additionally, by planning FLA events and activities, this class gives the homeschool student the unique opportunity to experience traditional "student government" without attending a school. A FLA leadership shirt is included in the class fee.

Sr. Musical Theater - 2 hour 20 minute class
Grades 4-12
$360 per semester

Become a part of a musical theater production! Each child will have a chance to participate as we rehearse and produce a Broadway Musical Jr production. Every week will be a full rehearsal. We practice stage presence, singing, and dancing. Simple costumes and props will be necessary. Some provided and some sourced from participants. Sr theater rehearsal time extends to 2:45 pm. We perform our 1 hour musical for parents and friends on an assigned performance day outside of class meeting times.
Note: additional rehearsals are required for this class.

Yearbook: Foothill Learning Academy
Grades 7-12

In this course, students will develop valuable real-world skills in time management, marketing, teamwork, and design principles. Working collaboratively, they will create an innovative and visually engaging yearbook that captures the memories and events of Foothill Learning Academy. Students will learn essential page design, publishing techniques, copywriting, and editing, gaining hands-on experience in the process. A laptop computer is required for this class to facilitate digital design and editing work.
