Novel Study: The Giver and The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle

Grades 5-8

$205 per semester (includes the cost of both novels)

This interactive class is completely literature-based and fun! We read, discuss, and analyze super engaging, age-level appropriate novels. Each week the students will read and annotate focusing on various aspects of the novel including mood, theme, characters, conflict, literary devices, and personal connections. There is optional homework students can complete for a grade to prepare them for discussion, increase their critical thinking skills, and satisfy state curriculum requirements. This class is perfect not only for students who love to read, but for students who are resistant readers as well. All books will be provided and are included in the class tuition. This semester students will be creating an interactive notebook as we explore and practice four types of paragraphs: narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive. I Want to be an Author: Book Creation

Grades 4-6, 6-8

This is the class for you if you’ve ever wanted to learn about the process of creating a children’s book. You will become a self-

published author capable of selling your creation online if you so desire. Use of a laptop in class is acceptable or work can be saved as homework to do at home. We will be working within a program called Canva for creating our written and illustrated works. We’ll walk through the steps of deciding what to write, ways to make your writing memorable, and how to publish it for the whole world, or maybe just your family to read.

Math Escape Room: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking

We have brand new escape rooms for the Fall ‘25 semester! This is a unique Math class that combines the excitement of escape rooms with the practical application of math skills. Students will work together in groups to solve math puzzles and problems, leading them to clues that will help them escape the room before time runs out.

Each escape room will be themed around a different mathematical concept, such as geometry, algebra, or probability. Students will apply their knowledge of these concepts to decipher clues, solve equations, and unlock the next steps in their escape. They will also develop critical thinking skills as they work collaboratively to solve complex problems under pressure. Throughout the class, students will gain a deeper understanding of how math is used in real-world scenarios and develop their problem-solving skills. The class is designed for students who have a good foundation in basic math skills and are looking for a fun and challenging way to apply them. Math Game Madness

We have brand new Math games for the Fall ‘25 semester! Math Game Madness is a fun and interactive math class that uses games and puzzles to teach mathematical concepts to homeschool students. Wild Innovations: Animal Adaptions
Grades 4-6, 6-8

What's so special about your thumbs? Why are there so many bird beak shapes? These questions and more will be answered while students explore the incredible diversity of animal adaptations that allow creatures to thrive in their unique environments. From the deepest oceans to the highest mountains, animals have evolved fascinating strategies to survive and reproduce. This course delves into the various types of adaptations—physical, behavioral, and physiological—that enable animals to find food, evade predators, and cope with extreme climates. Please note that natural selection will be discussed as it applies to Darwin's finches and their different beak shapes. This lab is offered Fall 2025 in Placerville and Spring 2026 in El Dorado Hills.

Microscope Lab: Exploring the Invisible World

Grades 4-8

Discover the exciting hidden microscopic world with a microbiologist! In this class, students will learn the parts/functions of a microscope and how to properly use it without damaging lenses and slides. They will explore the wonders of pond water (diatoms/algae/protozoa and various other tiny creatures)/pollen/plant and insect parts, stain/examine their cheek cells and onion cells, solve "crimes" using hair and fiber samples, and more. I provide high-quality microscopes for students to use, however, students are welcome to bring their own microscope. This lab is offered Fall 2025 in El Dorado Hills and Spring 2026 in Placerville.

Science: Cycles of the Earth

From fluttering butterflies to colorful coral, speeding comets, and the carbon cycle the Earth is full of repeating processes. Set off on a journey to follow the stories of plants, animals, stars, rivers, and volcanoes. Everything grows, changes, and has a life cycle. Life is always changing, but it follows a pattern too. Although they appear endless, some of these cycles are fragile and can be drastically changed by nature or humans. Students study the ideas, issues, and events from the framing of the Constitution (beginning with colonization) up to reconstruction following the Civil War.  After reviewing the development of America's democratic institutions, particularly the shaping of the Constitution, students trace the development of American politics, society, culture, and economy and relate them to the emergence of major regional differences. They learn about the challenges facing the new nation, with an emphasis on the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War. National Treasure: US History through Cinema (Fall)

In this course, students will use the 2004 movie, National Treasure (PG),  as the backdrop to explore geography,  historical events and figures, as well as literary themes.  In the movie, the protagonist uncovers a plot to steal the Declaration of Independence. The historic events and individuals referenced through the movie will be analyzed and discussed in class. Additionally, we will examine themes within the movie such as liberty and freedom. Each week the students will complete one hands-on project based on the topic studied.  At the end of the course, the students will watch the movie in its entirety, focusing on discerning fact from fiction. This class enhances, and does not duplicate, material presented in US History. (Yearlong class, with each semester focusing on a different movie. Students welcome to join in the Spring)

Drawing and Painting

All new lessons! Fine art techniques including shading, proportions, and texture will be taught through drawing and painting animals, still life, and a special section "Shine and Glimmer" where students will learn how to create the effect of a neon sign glowing, disco balls gleaming, stars shining in a nebula, and lights glowing. Throughout the class, the artists will at times work from reference photos I select and at other times work from reference photos they choose.  Students will mostly work at their own pace, and some more involved pieces may take several class periods to complete.  A variety of media including graphite, watercolor, acrylic, and pastels will be taught and explored in this class.

Modern Day Artists

Grades 6-8

Whether you consider yourself an artist or not, you're sure to have fun trying out the abstract and experimental art styles of modern day art from Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, to iconic artists that are alive today.  Students will learn about the stories of art periods and movements of the modern day as well as the artists who were involved in those.  Here is a sneak peak of some of those interesting stories we will learn about and art we will create:  Discover why a stool with a bicycle tire attached to the seat is in the Museum of Modern art.  Make your own "Fake Art"  piece using paint in a mini pendulum you make to imitate the style of Callen Schaub, the artist whose paintings on Fender guitars sell for thousands of dollars.  Learn about the science and engineering discovered behind Jackson Pollock's drip paintings and have fun making your own drip painting too.

Sr. Musical Theater - 2 hour class

Grades 4-12

$375 per semester

Become a part of a musical theater production! Each child will have a chance to participate as we rehearse and produce the Broadway Musical: Frozen Jr. Auditions for parts happen on day one! We practice stage presence, singing, and dancing as we develop our show. Costumes and props will be necessary. Most are provided. Students will be required to provide base costume

pieces (like a certain colored t-shirt, pants) and possibly a specific piece for their character. We perform our 1 hour musical twice on an assigned performance day outside of class meeting times to a live audience!

 

Note: additional rehearsals are required for this class close to our performance date. A rehearsal schedule and further details will be sent out one month before we begin class. Sr theater rehearsal time extends to 2:45 pm.

Vocal Performance: Fall 2025

A place to fine tune voice and style. We will work as a class on pieces throughout the semester covering different genres of music. Covering broadway, jazz, classical choral, and more. Students will have opportunities for solos within our group pieces. Singing takes more than a pair of vocal cords. We will learn about how to create better sound through posture and support. In this American Sign Language class students will be introduced to basic conversational vocabulary and grammatical structures including but not limited to fingerspelling, gestures, signing space and simple written conjugation.  Students will learn the alphabet, numbers, colors, emotions, animals, family structures, common nouns and familiar day to day communication.  The 5 foundational parameters of ASL will also be taught using fun repetitive songs, games and activities to encourage muscle memory and sight association.  In addition to learning a fun new language ASL is a great resource for enhancing cognitive abilities.  It improves visual-spatial skills, memory and multitasking capabilities.  Students will also learn about deaf culture in the United States, promoting awareness and sensitivity towards diverse communication styles.  This class is primarily ASL but I will introduce ‘Exact-Sign’ concepts as a contrast when learning spoken syntax.  I absolutely love signing and teaching sign language, it is very rewarding!

 

This class promotes World Languages State Standards which include interpretive, interpersonal & presentational communication, language comparisons, and culturally appropriate interactions.  This class is designed to grow with your student and can be taken multiple semesters for up to 2 years. This class requires an additional $10 material fee for workbooks.

Into to Robotics Using Arduino Technology

Learn Arduino coding and use it to control lights, sound, and motors. Learn to write your code to respond to input from switches and sensors. Then put it all together to create your own robot! Understand the value of perspective and telling a story with an image. These things will make even a camera phone a tool for art. Hand Sewing

Have fun learning to sew by hand!  Sewing helps improve fine motor skills and focus. Ingenious Inventions: Building with Rube Goldberg Machines

Named after the famous American cartoonist and inventor, Rube Goldberg, these contraptions are designed to perform simple tasks in the most complicated, whimsical, and entertaining ways possible. Kid's Kitchen

All new recipes for a brand new year! In this fun course, students will explore cooking and baking basics. Along with food and kitchen safety, menu planning, recipe creation, and how-to meal prep. Students will learn about different ingredients and spices that will inspire them to create recipes to take home and cook for their families. Some of the recipe ideas we will be covering this semester include Bolognese, lumpia, salsa verde, s’mores bake and more! After an in-class demonstration, food prep, and taste test, students will cook their meals at home with their families, rather than in the classroom. Lego Engineering

Does hands-on building and creating sound like fun? Then come join us in engineering class, where we learn STEM concepts through building projects using LEGO® parts and motors. Design machines that roll, walk, and even play sports, and build large structures inspired by Roman Aqueducts, the Taj Mahal, and more. Speak Up! Public Speaking, Debate, & Interpersonal Communication

During the first semester, this course explores concepts in public speaking, critical thinking, argument, and debate. Students will study different styles of speeches, learn rhetorical strategies and practice the art of speech &  debate. The students will give several speeches to classmates. Study Hall and Tutoring: Advanced Learning and Planning
