Our focus this semester will be on essay writing and research. Contrary to popular belief, research essay writing can be fun!
This type of informative writing allows students to explore a topic that interests them and effectively convey important ideas, concepts, and information to their audience. Through guided research, students will learn to gather, summarize, organize, and analyze relevant information on a person of their choice. They will then be given step-by-step instruction in how to synthesize their research into an informative essay and performance script. The semester will culminate with the students dressing up as their topic and participating in our class Wax Museum for friends and family at Author’s Night.

This interactive class is completely literature-based and fun! We read, discuss, and analyze super engaging, age-level appropriate novels. Each week the students will read and annotate focusing on various aspects of the novel including mood, theme, characters, conflict, literary devices, and personal connections. There is optional homework students can complete for a grade to prepare them for discussion, increase their critical thinking skills, and satisfy state curriculum requirements. This class is perfect not only for students who love to read, but for students who are resistant readers as well. All books will be provided and are included in the class tuition. Spring semester we will be reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and one more age appropriate novel TBD.

Elementary Write On! What's Your Response?

Our focus this semester will be on writing a response to literature. After reading the short story, "The Blind Men and the Elephant," students will engage in a variety of activities that will encourage critical thinking and analysis of the story's theme. We will then learn to "respond" to the story in written form through a mini three paragraph essay. Math Escape Rooms - The Great Escape!

We have brand new escape rooms for the Spring ‘25 semester! This is a unique Math class that combines the excitement of escape rooms with the practical application of math skills. Students will work together in groups to solve math puzzles and problems, leading them to clues that will help them escape the room before time runs out.
Each escape room will be themed around a different mathematical concept, such as geometry, algebra, or probability. Students will apply their knowledge of these concepts to decipher clues, solve equations, and unlock the next steps in their escape. They will also develop critical thinking skills as they work collaboratively to solve complex problems under pressure.
Throughout the class, students will gain a deeper understanding of how math is used in real-world scenarios and develop their problem-solving skills. The class is designed for students who have a good foundation in basic math skills and are looking for a fun and challenging way to apply them. Math Through Art: Fall Semester

History Comes Alive: Night at the Museum

In this course, students will use the Night at the Museum (PG) movies as the backdrop to explore geography, historical figures, and literary themes. In the movies, historical figures on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC magically come to life at night! In class, after watching video clips from the movie, students will learn about the various key characters in the movie that “come to life” in the film. Additionally, we will examine themes within the movie such as collaboration, dedication, and hope. Each week the students will complete a small hands-on project based on the topic/character studied. Sr. Musical Theater - 2 hour 20-minute class

Become a part of a musical theater production! Each child will have a chance to participate as we rehearse and produce a Broadway Musical Jr production. Every week will be a full rehearsal. We practice stage presence, singing, and dancing. Simple costumes and props will be necessary. Some provided and some sourced from participants. Sr theater rehearsal time extends to 2:45 pm. We perform our 1 hour musical for parents and friends on an assigned performance day outside of class meeting times.

Learn Arduino coding and use it to control lights, sound, and motors. Learn to write your code to respond to input from switches and sensors. Then put it all together to create your own robot!
Continuing students will learn how to use additional sensors, and how to use displays and control motor position. Continuing students will also receive a new Workbook.
Electronics and Workbook used by the students are included in the class fee. Laptops will be provided for in-class use.

Elements of Photography
Grades 6-8
There is no need for a fancy camera to take a great picture! Learn the art of composition. Figure out how to use lighting to create mood. Understand the value of perspective and telling a story with an image. These things will make even a camera phone a tool for art. We will explore the functions of more advanced equipment, point and shoot pocket cameras, and how to make your camera phone do what you want it to! Basic digital editing will be covered during the last three weeks of class.
Class requirements: a camera (even a camera phone) and access to a computer. All other materials will be provided.

FLA Newspaper

In this course students are in charge! They gain real-world skills in time management, teamwork, journalism and leadership. Collaboratively, the students will work to create one issue of our Foothill Learning Academy newspaper that collects their best work along with a personal project with all of their work. They will be in charge of covering events, writing articles, editorials, cartoons, and taking photos. Students learn about print layout, how to write engaging pieces, publishing techniques, editing and photography. A laptop computer is required for this class.

Home Economics

Because much of an individual’s life has traditionally centered upon the home and the family, home economics has been largely concerned with learning how to deal with the problems and challenges of homemaking. In this class we’ll touch on all types of things that a person would be responsible for in the care and keeping of their home...whether it’s simply themselves or with others. Kid's Kitchen

Welcome to Kids Kitchen!
In this fun course, students will explore cooking and baking basics. Along with food and kitchen safety, menu planning, recipe creation, and how-to meal prep. Students will learn about different ingredients and spices that will inspire them to create recipes to take home and cook for their families. Some of the recipe ideas we will be covering this semester include meatballs, muffins, dips, chicken dishes, cookies and more! After an in-class demonstration, food prep, and taste test, students will cook their meals at home with their families, rather than in the classroom. Please be aware that this class is not tailored for households with food allergies and dietary restrictions.

Leadership & Service: FLA Student Government

Through a series of guided interaction and group exercises, students will explore the principles of leadership and learn to develop individual and group leadership skills to impact their lives and their communities. Content areas include decision-making, goal setting, effective communication, servant leadership, organization and time management skills, and concrete strategies to implement change. Additionally, by planning FLA events and activities, this class gives the homeschool student the unique opportunity to experience traditional "student government" without attending a school. A FLA leadership shirt is included in the class fee.

Lego Engineering

Does hands-on building and creating sound like fun? Then come join us in engineering class where we learn STEM concepts through building projects using LEGO® parts and motors. Explore your creative boundaries and connect your projects to real-world physics and engineering concepts, while guided by an experienced instructor. Returning students are welcome – we do new projects each semester.
All materials are provided. Students do not keep their creations, but are welcome to bring cameras to class to photograph their projects.

Mock Trial

Mock trials have proven to be an effective learning tool for students of all grade levels. It helps them understand the law, practice critical thinking, and gain greater confidence with public speaking by assuming the roles of attorneys and witnesses in a fictional criminal or civil trial. Students experience first-hand the difficulties that judges, lawyers and juries face in determining which facts are relevant and what legal arguments are effective. This class is taught by Mrs. Chiappe, a former practicing California Attorney.

PE Games and Fitness

Speak Up! Public Speaking, Debate, & Interpersonal Communication
Grades 4-8

During the first semester, this course explores concepts in public speaking, critical thinking, argument, and debate. Students will study different styles of speeches, learn rhetorical strategies and practice the art of speech & debate. The students will give several speeches to classmates. Various styles of speech will be studied, including: persuasion, impromptu, and extemporaneous. Second semester continues with an exploration of interpersonal communication. Student practice skills and strategies designed to enhance their ability to effectively communicate. This is a yearlong class, students are welcome to join the second semester. This course may be repeated as the student dynamics and presentations change the flow and information of each offering. (Year long class, students welcome to join in the Spring)
